Why do you need home insurance?

Home insurance offers important financial protection and peace of mind when life gets a little challenging. Whether you need to replace something that’s been stolen or fix damage to your home caused by bad weather, home insurance protects you against costly losses and repairs.

As a homeowner or tenant, home insurance helps you to get back on your feet when times are tough, safeguarding your investment and lifestyle.

Home insurance consists of buildings insurance and contents insurance, which can be taken out separately or as a combined policy. Where buildings insurance protects the bricks and mortar, contents insurance covers your treasured belongings inside the home.

Who needs home insurance?

Homeowners

As a homeowner, you’re responsible for insuring the building and your belongings. Without home insurance, you’re solely accountable for damage to your property. If you have a mortgage, your lender usually requires you to have home insurance.

Landlords

If you rent out your home and something needs to be fixed or rebuilt, home insurance focuses on getting it suitable again for tenants.

Tenants

For renters, home insurance is important for protecting your contents, especially if you live in a shared home or flat. In most cases, your landlord will have buildings insurance, so you should only need contents insurance to keep your possessions safe.

What does our home insurance cover?

By choosing our comprehensive home insurance policy, which covers buildings insurance and contents insurance, you’ll be protected from any unexpected and unforeseen event. This includes damage from flooding, fire, storms, and theft.

However, it won’t cover you for avoidable things, such as wear and tear.

Let’s take a quick look at what tends to be covered in our home insurance policy as standard.

What’s typically covered

Damage to your property and belongings: Loss or damage to the buildings and contents of your home (including gardens and garages). This includes:

Subsidence: Subsidence or landslide causing the building or part of it to collapse

Theft: Includes anything that is stolen from inside the home, from jewellery to your favourite gadgets. Also covers attempted theft.

Somewhere to stay: Alternative accommodation or loss of rent following insured damage.

Protection against injuries: Employers’ liability if you are held liable for injury to domestic employees, such as cleaners.

What’s not typically covered

General wear and tear: Damage that has occured slowly over time. For example, rot and rust.

Negligence: Failure to take proper care of something, or it was faulty to start with. Plus, deliberate damage or criminal acts by any member of the household.

Computer failure: Any mechanical or electrical breakdown.

Fences and gates: Damage to fences, gates or hedges from a storm.

Pet damage: Pet-related incidents, such as damaged carpets or pest infestations.

Motor vehicles: Includes mobility scooters and e-scooters, and their contents.

Note: Always check the policy documents for limits and exclusions. For more details, read our Home Insurance Product Information Document.

Accidental damage covers the repair or replacement of items damaged by events such as accidentally knocking over your TV or accidentally damaging the ceiling while in the loft.

Specified cover for valuable items

This cover is for individual items worth more than £5,000. Our standard contents cover includes protection for up to £30,000 of valuables with a maximum item value of £5,000.

Valuables include jewellery, watches, items made of gold, silver, or other precious metals, musical instruments and equipment, photographic equipment, spectacles, works of art, antiques, stamps, coins and medal collections.

Personal possession cover

Cover against theft, loss, or accidental damage for items worth less than £2,000 that you take away from home, such as jewellery, watches and portable electronics.

Extended (over £2,000) single-item cover is available for specified items under personal possessions.

Additional cover for money/credit cards

Covers up to £500 for loss of money and the fraudulent use of lost or stolen credit cards within the British Isles, and up to 60 days worldwide during the insurance period.

Additional cover for freezer foods

This is in addition to the £500 included in your contents cover, and your excess will not apply to this section.

Additional cover for bikes

Our policies include £350 of cover as standard. You can increase coverage up to £10,000 with a maximum of £5,000 per bicycle.

Family legal protection cover

Provides access to a 24-hour legal helpline for advice and assistance, covering costs incurred up to £50,000 during legal proceedings.

Customise your home insurance

To enjoy the full benefits of everything we have covered above, we recommend opting for the combined buildings & contents insurance policy. However, you may find that another policy is right for you.

Whatever your needs and preferences, we’ve got you covered.

Buildings insurance

Covers the repair costs for any damage to a home’s structure and fittings, typically caused by fire, floods, storms and other natural disasters. It also protects garages, outbuildings and areas of a garden. A necessity for homeowners.

Contents insurance

Protects all belongings inside a home from theft, vandalism and accidental water or oil damage from domestic appliances. A go-to choice for tenants.

Buildings and contents insurance

This combined home insurance policy includes both buildings and contents insurance, covering your property for everything. Recommended for all homeowners and cheaper than getting separate buildings and contents insurance.

How much does home insurance cost?

The cost of home insurance is determined by several factors. These can include:

  • Where you live: Some homes are more at risk from extreme weather than others.
  • Your property type: What building you live in, and the materials that have been used. Homes with lots of rooms or expensive materials will cost more to repair.
  • Whether you’ve claimed before: Your claim history will impact how much you’re quoted.
  • Security issues: If your property is at high risk because of the area you live in, or a lack of security features.
  • What cover you need: The more protection you need, the higher the price of your home insurance.

At sagic, you’ll benefit from affordably priced home insurance that’s tailored to your needs. Plus, your cover is backed by a friendly, responsive service.
